Aerial lifts are also known as bucket trucks, scissor lifts or cherry pickers.
These lifts are insulated pieces of equipment that consist of a carrier mounted on to a vehicle. The lifts are used primarily in the electrical utility sector to allow maintenance work. Electricians use these lifts to repair high voltage live wires. The lift fulfills a dual purpose. It allows the electrician to reach the wire mounted above ground level and it also serves as an insulation to protect the worker in the event of an accidental contact with the live line.
However, the boom tip on these lifts is not insulated and an accidental contact with the control handle can result in a fatality. This is a design defect. Another cause of accidents with aerial lifts is boom collapse because the bolts holding the turret in place fatigue and break. Aerial lifts without the technology to protect linesmen from electrical hazards are a risk to life and limb. If you have suffered an injury because of an aerial lift, then you must check your eligibility for an aerial lift injury lawsuit.
An average of 26 construction workers die each year from using aerial lifts. This is 2 to 3% of all construction deaths. On aerial lifts, the major causes are falls, electrocutions, and collapses or tipovers. For this article, aerial lifts include boom-supported aerial platforms, such as cherry pickers or bucket trucks, and elevating platforms, such as scissor lifts (OSHA regulates scissor lifts as mobile scaffolds, not aerial lifts). There are also 2 to 3 deaths each year from working on crane personnel platforms. Electricians had the most deaths (25%), followed by construction laborers (15%), electrical power installers and repairers (13%), painters (8%), and carpenters (5%).
Alex R. Hernandez Jr. can evaluate and prosecute the case on your behalf. We will identify the underlying cause of the accident – manufacturing defect, poor engineering, design defect, or shoddy maintenance. It is our endeavor to get our clients justice to the best extent possible for the avoidable physical and mental suffering that they have undergone.
